Item 3: I peel back the curtain and make my performance expectations clear.

In order for students to successfully meet their academic goals, it is important for teachers to provide clear and specific expectations of what is required. This can be achieved by creating a rubric that outlines the criteria for how the assignment will be graded. By focusing on growth and starting with the proficient level, students are given the opportunity to understand that improvement is always possible. Even when a student may receive a grade of zero, it is important to provide feedback that indicates what areas need improvement and to emphasize that growth is achievable. This helps to promote a growth mindset and encourages students to strive for excellence. According to Goodwin and Hubbell (2013), rubrics should be created to encourage growth and teachers should use language that suggests areas of improvement rather than simply indicating a lack of understanding. By providing clear expectations and encouraging growth, teachers can help their students succeed academically and develop a positive attitude towards learning.

Below is a general rubric we use as a Visual Arts department as well as specific requirements we concluded as a draw/paint 2 class.
