Item 8: I create an oasis of safety and respect in my classroom.
I strive to create a culturally responsive environment that embraces diversity and encourages creativity. One way I do this is by introducing my students to a variety of artists from different backgrounds who share a common interest in metamorphosis or specialize in linoleum carving printmaking. By showcasing the diverse perspectives and styles of these artists, I hope to provide my students with a sense of representation and validation for their own cultural identities (Alison, G).
However, simply exposing my students to different artists is not enough. To truly create a positive and supportive learning environment, I also prioritize building positive connections with my students. This is a key aspect of my culturally responsive teaching strategy, which I believe is essential for ensuring that every student feels safe, valued, and heard.
There are several ways in which I foster positive connections with my students. For example, I practice active listening, empathy, and mutual respect when engaging with them. I encourage students to share their thoughts and opinions, and I am always open to feedback on my teaching approach. By demonstrating my commitment to their well-being, I hope to create a sense of trust and mutual respect that will allow my students to thrive academically and personally. Another important aspect of my teaching philosophy is recognizing that there are many paths to success. I believe that students learn in different ways and at different paces, and it is my job to provide a variety of learning activities and opportunities that cater to different learning styles. This means using popular culture and relevant technology to enhance student learning (Thorne, K). For example, I will continue to use platforms like Quizlet and Kahoot to create fun and interactive learning activities that appeal to students who may not normally participate in class.
